Join us at Madden’s Resort on Gull Lake in the Brainerd Lakes Area on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM. This one day intensive workshop is open to everyone from high school and college students that have a spark and passion for the outdoors to business owners & professionals already working in the industry.
“One of the most common questions asked is ‘How do I make a living in the fishing industry?’,” said Al Lindner. “The sport fishing industry is so multifaceted and each speaker from various aspects of the industry will share their personal journey with practical in-depth, step-by-step advice on what it took to get where they are at today. Our goal is to have participants walk away with practical information, guidance and expertise to help them successfully navigate the sport fishing waters.”

Joel Nelson, Writer, TV/Media Personality, Joel Nelson Outdoors
Joel Nelson is a well-known TV/Media personality in the fishing and hunting industry. A self-admitted “fish nerd,” Nelson holds advanced degrees in the natural sciences, including fisheries and digital mapping, allowing him to both think like a fish and find them. Annually, he participates in numerous TV, Radio, and writing venues, highlighting relevant stories on his website - Joel Nelson Outdoors. Joel works with the biggest names in ice-fishing, open-water, and hunting; all while focusing on genuine experiences and the how-to’s he’s been afforded the opportunity to learn along the way. “I started working in this industry to have fun and find a way to fund my passion. What I've learned along the way is that while often times each of those two goals are directly pitted against one another, you can't be good at your business craft without remembering why you started to begin with and ensuring you're still having fun along the way.”
Dan Johnston, St. Croix Rods, National Accounts Manager
Dan is the national accounts manager for St Croix Fishing Rod Company. He has been in this role for two years after 16 years of regional account management for St Croix. In addition to managing national accounts, Dan is on St Croix’s product development team and also is a major contributor to St Croix’s marketing efforts through national podcasts (wefishasa.com), magazines, product videos, and television appearances. He also conducts fly casting clinics all over the Midwest for retailers and the general public.
Jason Mitchell, Jason Mitchell Fishing
Jason Mitchell earned a legendary reputation as a guide on Devils Lake, North Dakota and leads one of the largest and most successful guide services in the Midwest. Mitchell also hosts and produces the television program, Jason Mitchell Outdoors which is airing its tenth season on Fox Sports North and Fox Sports Midwest. With over twenty years in the fishing industry, Mitchell has developed many products that carry his name and has pioneered many tactics and strategies that have helped legions of anglers catch more fish. In 2016, Mitchell was inducted into the North Dakota Fishing Hall of Fame.
Jeff Kolodzinksi, Johnson Outdoors, Humminbird/Minnkota, Brand Manager
Jeff Kolodzinksi is the Humminbird Brand Manager in the Fishing Division at Johnson Outdoors. With his finger on the pulse of industry giant Johnson Outdoors, Jeff’s extensive consumer insight drives the Humminbird brand forward, focusing on marketing strategy, advertising, promotion, public relations and cultivating true friendships. A key member of the sport fishing industry, Jeff has held top positions at Gander Mountain and Frabill. Jeff’s passion for the outdoors is evident in his career and family life, and preserving of outdoor traditions for generations to come.
Jim Meister, Power Lodge and Power Lodge Adventures, Operations Manager
Jim literally started his career with the Power Lodge from the ground up in 2008. Hired as a part time salesman his first task was to lay the sod in the front yard of the new facility. Ten years have now past and the Power Lodge has more than doubled their square footage as a result of a thriving marine business anchored by Lund and Ranger Boats. Jim has now worked in every facet of the business and enjoys helping people enjoy their passions. He also is leading a new endeavor called Power Lodge Adventures which is a program that introduces people to the outdoors through a larger program called Polaris Adventures. If Jim is not at the store you can find him on the lake or on the trails. Jim is a graduate of St. Cloud State University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation.
Captain Eric Haataja, Big Fish Guide Service
Capt. Eric Haataja is proven as one of North America's best fishing guides. Currently Eric holds the IGFA World Record for Brown Trout. He has been a full time guide for 20 years, fishing 365 days a year. Eric is also a Bass tournament angler, seminar speaker, fishing educator, television show host, and YouTube video producer with over 50 million views on his YouTube page.
Ryan DeChaine, Wired2Fish, Vice President of Video and Production
Ryan began his fishing industry career with Lindner Media Productions, gaining nearly a decade of unparalleled experience in the creation of dynamic and compelling television programming and video production promoting the sport fishing industry. In his current role of VP of Video and Production at Wired2Fish, Inc., Ryan is responsible for overseeing the creation and measurement of Wired2Fish’s digital video content for wired2fish.com and its social media platforms, as well as producing award-winning video creative for some of the biggest companies in the fishing industry. When Ryan isn’t wearing his content creator hat, he and his wife Jillian are raising outdoor kids and living the lifestyle he promotes.
Jim Stewart, Rollie and Helen’s Musky Shop
Jim Stewart is an avid Musky angler who turned his lifetime passion of Musky fishing into a career. Jim is the owner of the World's Largest Musky Shop "Rollie & Helen’s” or more simply put, The Musky Shop located in Minocqua, Wi. The Musky Shop has thousands of lures, rods, reels, nets and everything that goes with it, for great musky fishing" said, Jim.
Growing up Jim owned and operated a family farm along with running a snow removal and lawn care business for 19 years. The aspects of owning and operating those businesses aided in his transformation into the retail world and owning the World's Largest Musky Shop. "We're kind of a destination stop. Not just Minocqua, but people travel from all around the world to come to The Musky Shop," said Stewart.
Since Jim took over in 2003 he has worked tirelessly to bring The Musky Shop into the 21st century by improving the website, staying up to date with technology, and giving The Musky Shop a social presence. Don’t be surprised if you check out their Facebook page to see Jim or his employees demonstrating a new musky lure or reel.
Jim has fished Muskies all across the Musky range and even a few tournaments with 1 victory. But he is much more comfortable fishing with family members or friends. With a lot of hard work and prayer he has turned his passion into a reality.
Megan Christianson, Grand Rapids Tourism, Executive Director, Minnesota State Tourism Council
With the mission of “Generating a positive economic impact through travel and tourism,” Megan Christianson is the Executive Director of Visit Grand Rapids since 2012. Megan has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University, St. Paul Campus. She has 20 years of marketing, public relations, and trade industry membership/advocacy experience. Christianson currently serves as a Board Member of the Minnesota Arrowhead Association, and is the NE Minnesota representative on the Explore Minnesota Tourism Council. She is also a Blandin Foundation Community Leadership Alumni. Megan lives in Cohasset Minnesota with her husband (Chad) and their two children (Madison – 17 and Caleb – 15). She enjoys being on the lake, scrapbooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Barb Carey, Wisconsin Women Fish Woman Ice Angler Project, Founder & President, USCG Captain
Barb Carey is the Founder and President of WI Women Fish and the Women Ice Angler Project. Barb has been working in the fishing industry for over 12 years. As a licensed guide and certified angler educator, Barb teaches classes in boating, trolling, and all sorts of fishing techniques. She leads Women on fishing adventures throughout the Midwest and Canada. She is a seminar speaker, and works with companies to improve products geared toward Women. Barb also works in the outdoor communication world as an award winning author and radio host. She is a frequent guest on Larry Smith Outdoors television and creates media content to promote Women anglers. She is on the pro staff of Lund Boats, Off Shore Tackle Company, Clam Outdoors, Jiffy, and others. She travelled to Hungary to compete in the 2017 World Championships of Match Fishing for the first ever Women's Team USA. Barb is a mentor to other women looking to work in the outdoor industry.
Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson, Pro Tournament Angler, Writer, Guide
Jeff Gustafson, also known as “Gussy”, is one of the few Canadian angler to fish the FLW Tour. He grew up on the shores of Lake of the Woods on the Canada/US border. Gussy guides in all seasons, both fishing and deer and wolf hunting. Gussy fished his first bass tournament when he was 10 years old. He is also the host of a TV fishing program in Canada called “Fishing with Gussy”. In addition, he is also a guide, writer/photographer and promoter. His fascination for bass fishing bloomed out of the attending the KBI (Kenora bass International) with his parents. Since then, Gussy has hit the ground running, fishing, networking, promoting, honing his skills, and bringing to life his dream to make a living in the fishing industry.
Tom Neustrom, Professional Guide/Promotions, Minnesota Fishing Connections
Tom Neustrom is among a short list of the very best fishing guides in the United States, and a tireless promoter of the fishing industry for over 35 years. Nationally recognized within the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, and a member of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of fame, Tom is the consummate fishing professional and a legendary guide. Representing some of the largest companies in fishing, Tom has an incredible talent that the industry has relied on for decades. Troy is the host of AnglingBuzz as well as The Ontario Experience on television. Proficient in so many aspects of the angling arts, Troy has a penchant for getting off the beaten path and documenting his backwoods to exotic shore fishing excursions on social media. As an ardent traveler, Troy has had the opportunity to fish the lakes, rivers and reservoirs from the Pacific to the Atlantic, crisscrossing his way through remote regions of North America, to the lakes, rivers and streams of Europe and the Orient.
